The British Trust for Ornithology is looking for people in and around Thetford to help out on its nature reserve on the southern edge of the town. The 80 hectare site is a County Wildlife Site and is home to a wide range of wildlife including scarce species such as the Otter, Water vole, Lapwing, Skylark and Slow worm.
This fantastic reserve is just on the outskirts of Thetford and has over two kilometres of permissive paths to help bring people closer to wildlife as well as an observation hide. The reserve contains a wide variety of habitats including Breckland grass heath, wet woodland and flood-meadows. The wetland habitats are particularly important, especially the series of restored meanders along the river Little Ouse.
We are looking for people from the local community who are passionate about the countryside and who would be willing to give up some of their time to help out on the reserve. By doing so they will have the opportunity to learn about the secrets of this magical place as well as helping the wildlife which lives there.
No special skills are required, just bags of enthusiasm; Thetford Garden Centre have generously agreed to provide the tools and equipment. On-going management work includes path maintenance, scrub clearance and fence maintenance. Volunteers will also get the chance to help out on specific projects such as creating and maintaining nest-sites for Barn Owls, Kingfishers and Oystercatchers. There are also projects for the less physically able to get involved in, such as helping us to catalogue our second-hand books.

The meeting will be held at the BTO’s headquarters in Thetford and there will be a special presentation by the Reserve Manager, Chris Gregory.
